50 Finalists for Best Job in the World
Being a Caretaker on a beautiful Australian Island – sounds tough doesnt it?
Although many people dream of a job where they can get paid to sit around and do nothing on a luxurious island somewhere, for most people there is rarely the opportunity to turn that dream into a reality.
In Australia however they have created a post which has been dubbed the “Best Job in the World”, which basically involves getting paid to sit around and do nothing on a luxurious island in the Great Barrier Reef.
Officials from Queensland state will offer one lucky job applicant a six month contract worth A$ 150,000 (US$96,000 or £68,000) to be the official caretaker of Hamilton Island. The successful applicant will be charged with writing a blog online to promote tourism to the area.
Queensland’s tourism department received 35,000 applicants for the ultimate sloth job. Prospective island caretakers were asked to submit video applications of themselves to the Queensland tourism board explaining why they would be suitable for the post.
After an arduous whittling process, 35,000 has been reduced to 50. You can see the finalists here. The final 50 are a multinational bunch from 22 different countries around the globe including the UK, United States, Japan, France and Sweden.
The public can vote for their favourite candidate up until 24 March 2009, whereby the top 11 applicants will be invited to Hamilton Island for a final grilling interview.
Desley Boyle, Queensland’s minister for tourism told the Associated Press selecting the finalists was a tough job: “it was a robust discussion, but what it boiled down to was the motivation and professionalism of the applicants and their fit with the job”.
The final decision will be made on 6 May, the lucky winner will begin their job in paradise on 1 July 2009.
