The last remaning survivor of the Titanic has died.
The last remaining survivor of the legendary cruise ship the RMS Titanic has passed away at the age of 97.
Millvina Dean was just two-months old when she was taken aboard the doomed steamship, making her the youngest passenger on the ill-fated maiden voyage. Miss Dean died on Sunday in her home town of Southampton after being taken ill with pneumonia.
The news of her passing comes just weeks after stars of the Oscar-winning Titanic film Leonardo DiCaprio, Kate Winslet and director James Cameron donated £20,000 to help pay her nursing fees. Miss Dean began to experience difficulty with her fees in the latter years of her life, forcing her to sell off some of her cherished mementos from the ship.
Friends set up the Millvina Fund and upon hearing of her ailing fortunes, the stars stepped in to offer their aid.
As a baby, Miss Dean was set to immigrate to America with her family, however circumstances prevented this and following the death of her father Bertram on the ship she and the rest of her family returned to England. She was often known to remark on this change of destiny: “If it hadn’t been for the ship going down, I’d be an American,” she said.
Mr John White, one of the organisers of the Millvina Fund told BBC News that: “She was a lovely supportive lady and very kind-hearted”. The Titanic, referred to as “unsinkable” before its first journey, sank on the 15 April 1912 after colliding with an iceberg in the Atlantic ocean. Over two thousand people died in the tragedy.

Being only 2 months old she is only able to remember small things but each day she would ask her mom as she got older what it was like. When her mom passed away she felt alone but luckily she had her husband there for her. 1912-2009 R.I.P. Millvina Dean, we will truly miss you.
