Apple Poised for the Ultimate Tweet
Apple could pay $700 million for Twitter.
A big rumour in the world of technology suggests that Apple may be preparing to wade into the Twitter debate, as the latest company to put a bid forward for the internet social networking sensation.
TechCrunch has found a reliable insider source that claimed: “Apple is in late stage negotiations to buy Twitter and is hoping to announce it at WWDC (Worldwide Developers Conference) in June”. The source also revealed that the price of such a deal could be a mammoth $700 million.
The sum offered is considerably more than the $500 million that Facebook offered when they unsuccessfully tried to buy the micro-blogging website.
Proving to be the belle of the ball, other would-be wooers of Twitter include both Google and Microsoft who have also been linked with the potential purchase of Twitter. Growing at a rate 40 per cent a week and already with over 25 million users, Twitter is much-loved by the general public and celebrities alike. Oprah Winfrey recently helped add to its popularity by endorsing it on her US TV show.
Reports suggest that Apple would look to link Twitter with the iPhone, which recently found itself playing second fiddle in the US smartphone market to the BlackBerry Curve. Research In Motion Ltd, makers of the BlackBerry, dominated the smartphone market in the first quarter of 2009, claiming three out of the top five smartphone sales slots, with the BlackBerry Storm at number three and the BlackBerry Pearl at number four.
With wide reports that Apple will also be unveiling a brand new iPhone in June the WWDC could be a big event for Steve Jobs and his merry band of fruity cohorts.
