Avatar Blown Away by Hurt Locker Oscar Success

6 Oscars for The Hurt Locker sweeps past Avatar’s achievements in special effects.

Last night’s Oscars would have been a rather dull and predictable affair had it not been for the tension created between the two hottest movies in contention for the top awards, Avatar and The Hurt Locker.

As with the BAFTAs before them, the Academy rewarded The Hurt Locker over the multibillion grossing Avatar, creating history in a number of categories and taking 6 Oscars in total.

Most significantly among its haul, The Hurt Locker won the Oscar for Best Picture, a true David and Goliath victory as the movie now holds the record as the lowest grossing film ever to win Best Picture at the Oscars.

With worldwide takings of just over $21 million, The Hurt Locker was rightly slammed as a box office bomb, although at a total production cost of just $9 million, the movie proves that a big budget is not everything in making a successful film.

Director Kathryn Bigelow also became the first female to be honoured with the Best Director Oscar, adding to a growing tally which included a BAFTA and Directors Guild of America Award for her careful helming of The Hurt Locker. The movie also won accolades for Editing, Sound Editing, Sound Mixing and Original Screenplay.

Avatar meanwhile walked away much less decorated, with three Oscars for Visual Effects, Art Direction and Cinematography.

After The Hurt Locker‘s surprise haul, the evening went exactly to script. Jeff Bridges and Sandra Bullock both earned their Oscars after multiple nominations in years gone by without success.

Bullock summed up the occasion perfectly in her acceptance speech: “Did I really earn this or did I just wear you all down?” and truth be told both her and Bridges have had better acting performances than the ones they eventually won Oscars for, but it was their time to shine.

Bridges meanwhile quoted the Dude from his iconic role in The Big Lebowski: “I’ve had ups and downs. What does the Dude say? Strikes and gutters, man!”

In the Supporting Actors roles, Christoph Waltz and Mo’Nique were safe choices for the Academy, albeit deserving choices, as was Up for Best Animation.
