Avatar Could Cause Golden Globes Upset
Nomination leaders Up in the Air and Nine could leave Golden Globes empty handed.
Up in the Air and Nine have been the heavy hitters in this year’s Golden Globe Nominations list, being entered for at least five awards each. However, neither film is guaranteed an easy ride against strong competition from the likes of Avatar.
Whilst the two films will perhaps best be known for their male leads, George Clooney and Daniel Day-Lewis, it is the female casting which dominates the nominations for both films.
Up in the Air received two nominations for Best Supporting Actress for brilliant performances from Anna Kendrick and Vera Farmiga. Meanwhile, Nine received two Best Actress nominations for the roles portrayed by Penelope Cruz and Marion Cotillard.

Up in the Air has also been nominated for Best Film, Best Director and Best Screenplay; whilst Nine received its other two nominations for Best Song and Best Musical or Comedy. Although both films should come away with awards, both could easily leave the awards ceremony in January next year empty handed in a strong line up for the 67th Awards ceremony (full nominations below).
Best Film may well be awarded to James Cameron’s space epic Avatar, which premiered last week; whilst The Hangover has so far been the comedy hit of the year which should steal the Globe away from Nine.
Jason Reitman is in a tough category for Best Director and is surely an outside bet against Cameron (Avatar), Kathryn Bigelow (The Hurt Locker), Clint Eastwood (Invictus) and Quentin Tarantino (Inglorious Basterds).

The stunning screenplay for this year’s unexpected phenomenon (and arguably film of the year) District 9 should take the award for Best Screenplay, and actors Morgan Freeman and Matt Damon have a shout for the Best Actor award against the two favoured male leads.
All in all it’s shaping up to be a great awards ceremony. Who do you think will win the coveted prizes? Let us know with a comment below.
