DC heroes go head to head as first ever Batman and Superman comics sell at auction.

DC Comics’ two greatest superheroes, Batman and Superman will go head to head this week to see who can fetch the highest price for their debut comic appearances.

Yesterday a pristine copy of Action Comics #1, which introduces Superman and Lois Lane for the very first time, was sold to a private comic collector for a record-breaking $1 million.

However, the landmark event may be eclipsed on Thursday as a superbly preserved issue of The Detective Comic #27, the first comic appearance of Batman, goes on sale at auction.

First sold in 1938, Action Comics #1 is considered by many to be the Holy Grail of comics. Comic book dealer John Dolmayan told CBC News: “It’s considered by most people as the most important book. It kind of ushered in the age of superheroes.”

The $1 million price tag for the Superman original smashed previous records from last year when a similar copy of the same comic was sold for $317,000. However, the remarkable condition of the comic sold yesterday warranted its extraordinary price.

Stephen Fishler, founder of ComicConnect who sold both copies of the coveted comic said that there were maybe only 100 copies of Action Comics #1 left in the world, and possibly only two or three which could match the unrestored quality condition of the issue sold on Monday.

The Dark Knight has always attracted a greater fanbase than the Man of Steel however, and with just 50 copies of The Detective Comic #27 believed to still be in existence, Batman could triumph over Superman if his comic brings in over $1 million.

No other known copy of the comic is in as good condition as the one up for sale on Thursday at Heritage Auctions in Dallas. “This is the most important comic book ever to come up for sale,” commented auctioneer Ed Jaster to Metro.

What do you think about the two battling superheroes? Which character will triumph in the greatest of comic book struggles?

UPDATE: Batman Outsells Superman

A report from the BBC has confirmed that the Batman comic has indeed outsold Superman. An anonymous bidder paid over $1 million to win The Detective Comic #27 at auction. “We can really say that Batman has nosed out Superman, at least for now,” commented Barry Sandoval from the auction house.

UPDATE: Second Superman Comic Sells for $1.5 Million

Having already broken the $1 million barrier twice this year, the comic sales record was smashed again today as the LA Times revealed Superman’s Action Comics #1 sold for an astounding $1.5 million. Superman robs Batman of the record.

Seriously hope Batman can outsell Superman, way better comic and much cooler character.

The Superman comic already made a million, Batman has some way to go in order to equal or beat that record.

The Superman has “supposedy” sold for 1 million. Very sketchy details about the sale, at best!

When the bidding on the Detective passed $400,000 last week, it already broke the record, but it simply won’t beat yesterday’s $1,000,000 Action sale.

Of course, what really matters are the stories inside — The Batman Chronicles volume one and The Superman Chronicles volume one can be picked up for about $15 a piece, each reprints the Batman and Superman stories from these magazines and then some.

    Or the first Spider-Man.

DC comics just weren’t (and still aren’t) very well written.

I thought the world was fascinated with aliens? Why do they hate Superman so much? He’s the greatest naturalized citizen of the USA! Batman will win out on the comic book sale because there are fewer copies of his book left out there.

Get it straight. The Action Comics #1 sale can’t be confirmed yet the Detective #27 sale will be. Take that and your Krypton, Superman.

Not a truly confirmed sale though. Since it went collector to collector and not a public auction. It could just be another funny story.

It doesn’t matter if Batman’s comic sells for more, it still won’t bring his parents back to life.

I hope Batman wins but I know Action 1 is more important in the actual collecting hobby.

Well, I guess all the millions of Spider-Man #1 that sold in the 90s will always be worth only $1.75. Not to mention all the millions of X-Force #1.

Everyone knows that Iron Man is the best DC character ever, come on.

Some people say that Superman is better just because he can fly and stop a speeding bolt but I say Batman even though he can’t fly. Think about how he has gone all over the world just to study martial arts and when he was a child he saw his parents get murdered right before his very own eyes. But don’t get me wrong, I like Superman too – I just like Batman better. So sorry if this hurts your feelings, it’s just my opinion.
