Beer Goggles No Excuse for Sex Antics

Scientists prove beer goggles make women less attractive.

Beer Goggles, the routine excuse for drunken sex, have been discredited as an acceptable reason for last night’s questionable conquest.

Psychologists at the University of Leicester have found that consuming alcohol can actually make women appear less attractive, and doesn’t impair the ability to judge a woman’s age.

In the study led by Dr Vincent Egan, 240 candidates were shown pictures of women and asked to comment on their age and attractiveness. Half of the people in the experiment were completely sober whilst the other half had consumed alcohol and ranged from “relaxed and benign” to “unambiguously drunk”.

The subjects were shown pictures of ten 17-year-old women which had been digitally altered in some photos to appear younger, and others to appear older. The digital effects added varying amounts of make-up to disguise the women.

Dr Egan said: “Overall participants who drank alcohol actually rated all the women in the photos as less attractive, compared to the participants who hadn’t drunk alcohol. This seemingly flies in the face of the commonly held notion of ‘beer goggles’.”

So whilst this gives us a cheery opportunity to ridicule friends who have made somewhat suspect choices on recent nights out, more serious implications can be taken from the study.

Such findings could affect legal matters, especially court cases regarding under-age sex. Dr Tim Valentine of Goldsmith’s University in London said: “The results do not support the contention that alcohol consumed by the accused would lead him to judge the girl as appearing older. Therefore, the research does not support this defence.”

I think in the experiment you should have used real women in a bar setting not pictures. Any man shown pictures of a girl while drunk is likely to become bored because he knows he is the guinea pig in your little game and is dying to get down to the pub to do some real research. Perhaps a hidden camera?
