Blizzard Says no BlizzCon This Year – Focuses on Making Release Dates
Blizzard has announced that BlizzCon 2012 will not be happening as the developer concentrates on releasing new titles instead.
A bittersweet revelation if ever there was one! While Blizzard fans will be denied the truly entertaining spectacle of the developer’s annual gaming exhibition event, this does mean that the new titles in production will see the light of day earlier.
Where 2011 saw no new releases for Blizzard, 2012 could have no fewer than four:
- The second episode of legendary space RTS, StarCraft 2: Heart of the Swarm
- Quirky but epic-looking spinoff where heroes from multiple Blizzard universes unite: Blizzard DOTA (Defense of the Ancients)
- Kung Fu Panda styled World of Warcraft expansion: Mists of Pandaria
- And of course, the eagerly awaited return of the definitive hack n’slash dungeon crawler: Diablo 3
Given Blizzard’s near obsessive compulsion to polish games until they glow like phosphorus, there’s a lot of work still to be done to get these titles up to their remorselessly high standards. Hence, this year’s BlizzCon plans have been axed in order to free up the resources of Blizzard’s development teams.
Given the agonizing wait for Diablo 3, not to mention the heightened anticipation for SC2: Heart of the Swarm and Blizzard DOTA (Not too psyched about WoW Mists of Pandaria) this is a decision I can get behind. While BlizzCon is a reliably awesome show, often with some impressive reveals on future titles, I’d rather actually see some Blizzard games on the shelves this year!
What’s your take? Will you be sad to miss seeing BlizzCon this year? Or does the promise of quicker release times for the new titles more than make up for it?
