Buffy Back To Slay Another Day
Is Buffy the Vampire Slayer set to return to the big screen?
Cult TV hero Buffy the Vampire Slayer could be staking a serious claim to return to the big screen, but this time without the brains behind her previous incarnations, sci-fi scribe Joss Whedon.
The Hollywood Reporter has revealed that a planned reboot of the popular franchise is on the cards. However, instead of drawing inspiration from the Sarah Michelle Gellar-led TV series, the proposed new feature film would instead go back to the original movie from 1992.
In a move that is likely to enrage Buffy’s loyal legion of fans, the remake would eschew the continuity of the series, and all its popular supporting characters such as Xander, Spike and Angel. Perhaps equally frustrating for Buffy fans is the absence of the mastermind behind the original, Joss Whedon. Speaking to Hollywood blogger Michael Ausiello, Mr Whedon simply said: “I hope it’s cool.”
The new movie is being planned by Roy Lee of Vertigo Entertainment and Fran Kuzui from Kuzui Enterprises. The rights to the Buffy character have always been owned by Kuzui Enterprises, and after the slightly camp 1992 film, they approached Whedon about re-launching the character, an idea which became the acclaimed 1997 show.
The series ran for seven seasons on the Warner Bros. network and picked up many an ardent fan. They now hope to take Buffy into new territory, without upsetting previous fans by messing with Whedon’s existing creations.
Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter Fran Kuzui said: “It was Roy’s interest in taking Buffy into a new place that grabbed us. Everything has its moment. Every movie takes on a life at some point, and this seems like the moment to do this.”
No cast announcements have been made regarding the re-imagining of the Buffy franchise, but ‘mega-fox’ Megan Fox has been rumoured to want to sink her teeth into the project as the title heroine.
