Analysts expect over $800 million sales revenue from biggest game in history.
The latest instalment of Infinity Ward’s massively successful first-person shooter (FPS) Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 is finally here.
By the time you read this, the first copies will have been bought and played. In fact, if you are a Call of Duty fanatic, it’s probably 12 November, having locked yourself away for the last three days glorifying in the pew pew action bonanza.
God bless Activision Blizzard for bringing another legendary game to players worldwide, if you haven’t been hooked by the delights of World of Warcraft or Guitar Hero, you sure as hell will be hooked into Call of Duty. FPS games have never looked back since the first Call of Duty made its presence felt way back in 2003.
Two years ago on 21 July 2007, there was a mad rush for the seventh Harry Potter book at midnight to find out the epic conclusion of the magical wizarding story. Today 10,000 stores worldwide opened at midnight to allow fans the chance to see the sixth instalment of the Call of Duty series.
It’s a tribute to the Call of Duty legacy that a videogame is being talked about in the same manner as the opening weekend of a major Hollywood blockbuster. Modern Warfare 2 (confusingly the sixth in the Call of Duty saga) will break midnight box office records if it sells 370,000 copies, that’s only 37 copies per store opening up especially for the event.
If Modern Warfare 2 achieves that target, it will eclipse the midnight gross takings of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince film released by Warner Bros. earlier this year. The game is even expected to topple 2008′s summer blockbuster The Dark Knight, which swooped a cool $155 million in its opening weekend. Analysts expect the game to gross $837 million (£500 million) in sales.
Modern Warfare 2 picks up where Modern Warfare left off. Russian Ultranationalists are running rife, and it’s your job to sort out the problem the only way that makes sense in this mad, crazy world, by blowing the shit out of anyone and everyone who gets in your way.
The game has already been heavily criticised for its ultra-violent themes, in particular for one part of the game which “forces” the player to shoot innocent bystanders at a Russian airport in order to infiltrate the Ultranationalist terrorist cell.
Head of Infinity Ward, Vince Zampella said, “We push the story,” as he spoke to Fox News, “We want the player to be emotionally attached. We want them to be emotionally shocked.” There is no danger of not been shocked, even by Grand Theft Auto standards, Modern Warfare 2 pushes the boundaries, mainly because the graphics are so realistic, players feel like they are being dragged into a movie not a videogame.
Critics don’t have much of a leg to stand on however. The game is rated M for mature in the US and 18+ in the UK which means the content should only be viewed by gamers old enough to watch violence and distinguish fiction from reality. Activision has even built in an option for players to skip the “disturbing” scene if they wish, without losing continuity to the story.
Regardless of the criticism, Modern Warfare 2 is an astonishing game and will no doubt be a record breaker. Now we can look forward to the hype of Call of Duty 7, which will be here before you can say “Boom. Headshot”.

The Daily Telegraph announced today that Modern Warfare 2 has sold 1.23 million units in its first 24 hours, double that of GTA IV and accounting for £47 million pounds worth of sales.

If you like bad ping and host mitigation which btw means that ping can be worse on a bad uploading host and means that when that person leaves, say d/c or by choice, you have to stop for 5 seconds.

Yeah I hated COD4 so much. But fook me this game is seriously one of the best games I’ve played lately. If you cry about no 9v9 blah blah you’re just missing out and living in denial.

Played it for the first time LAST night. So far I haven’t found ANYTHING to dis-like. What an amazing job they’ve done with the graphics. Headed home a little early today JUST TO PLAY THIS MORE!

I have it for Xbox 360, the host migration is a nice change. I was so sick of the game dropping right when I was doing so well because someone wimped out. I am a little bit upset about the graphics… they seem to be worse than Call of Duty 4… I’m hoping the gameplay more than makes up for it. Kind of crazy how people are already level 50+ and the game just came out today… get a job.
That’s because you’re playing on a shitty Xbox 360, the graphics for PS3 are beyond beautiful.
Looks way better then CoD 4 on my 360 in full 1080p. If you aren’t using HDMI cables in 1080p then you really shouldn’t comment on graphics.
9 times out of 10 the Xbox 360 has better graphics than the PS3. Look at side by sides, and the back of half of the PS3 games, most only go to 720p

Some gameplay aspects seem to be much improved, the graphics are good but at times appear a little “cartoony”, but overall it seems to be a fitting sequel. It’s like a great movie sequel – it never quite lives up to the hype but is worth watching anyway.
This is the best game that has been created yet. Gameplay is awesome. The fact that I played 5 hours last night and did not disconnect from any game is a huge improvement from the last version. The only bad part is having to go to work on 2 hours of sleep

I’m at university and had my PS3 confiscated from me at end of summer by friend and brother back home because they knew this game was coming out in November… I cry while studying sometimes because I know that it’s out there and I can’t play. Oh well, I’m going to break a world record over Christmas break and play for 48 hours straight!
So for Xmas you pretty much have no life.
I picked up my copy last night at 12. Waited for about an hour and a half and ended up staying up until 6:30 this morning. I couldn’t put this game down. It is absolutely beautiful and has the same expected framerate as CoD 4. The new guns are innovatve and exciting to use. There are just so many more little goodies in this game. For instance, you can now decide what you want your kill streaks to earn you. You also have equipment now and can carry fully automatic pistols or dual wield TMPs. I’m overwhelmed with how awesome it is. I have been gaming for a VERY long time and am in school to become a game programmer. Trust me, I’m not an easy critic and this game earns a 10/10!

A drop from 64 players to 18 and removal of dedicated servers is hardly ‘insignificant’.
I’m really sorry you’re so used to console dross but, yes, I do get annoyed when the functionality of a title is crippled to suit an inferior system.
They dropped all those computer features because it was a waste of money for them. They are making way more money off of consoles than from shitty computer gamers.

I played a few hours last night still prefer 2142, just wish it was more stable. Played PC version on my big screen.
People hate on everything! This game was sooo entertaining, it was a movie and video game in one. Two thumbs up! And I’m impressed with the NVGs too. LOL.
It’s perfect in every way. I got it free too. I work at Toys R Us and somebody returned their copy. We destroy all defective games, but I took it home instead of breaking it. Works totally fine! I guess it was his console and not the disc.

Some copies came out earlier over here in the UK because some retailers sent it out earlier because of a postal/mail strike but it came quicker, suckers.
Face it, MW2 is gunna be tha best shooting online game until tha next Call of Duty comes out… MAG won’t have shit on Call of Duty.

Well, the people who are complaining about the graphics: technically the native resolution of the PS3 is only about 650p, which is then converted by the PlayStation to 1080p. The Xbox version on the other hand is native resolution at 1080p and completely uncompressed. The one advantage to the PlayStation version is that it runs at 30 frames per second, which is slightly faster than the 24 that the Xbox produces. The 30fps is great if you have a lower Hz television such as 60Hz compared to 120Hz. If everybody would just buy a plasma, there would be no problems with this.
As far as the number of people in a game. The 9v9 gameplay makes for a much smoother experience and a more interesting one at that. When you have too many people the maps increase in size, which also creates more strain on the servers.
Thanks to this game I don’t have to smoke crack anymore.
I bought the game on Friday and when I got on it and played it..WOW!!!!! They have done an amazing job with this, and I do not doubt if this turns out to be the top selling game of all time.
Definitely the best shooter that I have ever played, and I have been playing games for a long time. The AI is amazing. the graphics are uncompromised. I have it hooked up to my brand new LED television. Its truly a beautiful thing to experience. Oh yeah, this game is the shit on PS3….

I have played this game and IT’S FUCKING AWESOME ! The graphics, the perks, the weapons, all the new stuff is exciting! But it has a BIG problem: Dedicated Servers
If IW will not improve a good match-making system there will be no leagues, clans or competitions. I strongly believe they will patch it and they will make MW2 like the first one! Cheers
OK. For all PC haters; you probably don’t have one. PC has the highest potential for gaming than any fucked up console. This game is a middle finger the size of the Empire State Building to all PC gamers, so we’re gonna give it right back to the bitches at Activision. Nobody’s going to buy it for PC, cuz the friggin’ single player sounds better than multiplayer AND co-op. 9v9? SERIOUSLY? And no dedicated servers? NO MODS??? Activision is throwing away their fan base with so much gusto that I’d say they all have negative IQs. And they say they don’t work too hard on the PC version because of piracy. WTF!!! The first pirated copy of MW2 was for Xbox 360, a WEEK before release! And you know what, a crappy console port on PC DESERVES to be pirated…

I love this game. I would have to say the graphics could be just a little better but I play the game all the time and, yes, I’m running a full HD 150Ghz 1080P projector with an LCD projection screen. So yes, I know what I’m talking about when it comes to graphics.
God of War 3 graphics are so amazing also. I’ve been playing CoD since the pc.
