Ethiopian Plane Crashes in Beirut Lightning Storm

90 people feared dead after plane comes down in Mediterranean Sea.

Rescue missions are continuing to search for survivors of a horrific plane crash as an Ethiopian Airlines aircraft exploded into a fireball and crashed into the Mediterranean Sea near Lebanon earlier this morning.

The aircraft was just minutes into its flight from Beirut to Addis Ababa when air traffic control at Beirut Airport lost contact with Ethiopian Airlines Flight 409. Eyewitnesses reported a huge flash in the sky as the plane crashed into the sea.

As details emerge about the flight, there are discrepancies in reports as to exactly how many people were onboard the plane before it went down. The BBC has reported that 80 passengers and nine crew were aboard, whilst the Lebanese National News Agency estimated that there were 97 passengers and crew.

So far at least nine bodies have been recovered from the sea. Rescue teams have found no survivors and hopes are slim that any could have escaped the tragic crash.

Over half of the passengers onboard were from Lebanon, with 23 Ethiopians and passengers from France, Russia, Canada, Syria, Iraq and Turkey. Two British nationals were also onboard the flight.

The cause of the crash is as yet unknown, but authorities in Lebanon have ruled out the possibility of a terrorist attack. The flight took off in extremely poor weather conditions with heavy run and thunder storms looming. It is believed that the aircraft might have been struck by lightning which caused the plane to catch fire.

The Lebanese military along with United Nations forces were working under extreme weather conditions to search for survivors.
