F1 Legend Michael Schumacher is Back for Mercedes
Team Germany welcomes back greatest F1 racer ever.
For many, Michael Schumacher IS Formula One racing, so when the 40-year-old racing legend announced his return to the sport, it’s fair to say that F1 got its mojo back.
The 2009 Championship was thrilling, but part of the excitement of this year’s competition was tuning in to see if Jenson Button could really throw away what was an extraordinary lead from the first seven races of the season.
2010 with Schumacher back in contention is a completely different affair. Although Mercedes has remained tight-lipped about the deal, Schumacher is believed to have signed a £6.25 million one-year deal to race for Mercedes GP as part of the waxing strength of “Team Germany”.
The return of the legend will rank among the greatest comebacks in sporting history, as Schumacher joins fellow sporting heroes Lance Armstrong and Michael Jordan as icons of their sport who came back to make a big impact. Schumacher will drive alongside fellow countryman Nico Rosberg who said it would be “absolutely fantastic” to race in the same team as the former seven times world champion.
The hype was already high when Schumacher offered to help out Ferrari last year when Felipe Massa got injured. Now Schumacher is back for a full year, the anticipation for 2010 has reached fever pitch.
As Simon Caney, editor-in-chief of Sport magazine commented: “In many ways it feels as if the events of 2009 have merely been a precursor to a fabulous year to come.” Team Germany now face strong opposition from Team GB, as McLaren have two British hot shots in Button and Lewis Hamilton desperate to assert their influence over the might of Mercedes.
“Even those who look at F1 with disdain are secretly looking forward to it,” observed Mr Caney – it’s going to be a great season.

Michael Schumacher + Mercedes = World Championship. That is my view! I am a huge F1 fan and love following online sports blogs. Schumacher may be as old as Jenson Button and Lewis Hamilton put together, but he is still a legend and quicker than any other driver on the circuit today. Can’t wait for the F1 frenzy to start – this season promises to be a hot one!
