Fabregas Can’t Say Nou to Barcelona

Fabregas Can't Say Nou to Barcelona

Cesc Fabregas has his heart set on leaving Arsenal for Barcelona.

Arsenal anchor and playmaker Cesc Fabregas seems destined to play at Barcelona next season after the player made it crystal clear to manager Arsene Wenger that he wanted to leave the club.

Fabregas will be returning home having arrived at Arsenal from Camp Nou when he was a 16-year-old youth player. Seven years and zero trophies later, the Spaniard is pining for home, or possibly just a greater chance for silverware.

According to various reports in the media Barcelona are keen to sign the exciting midfielder for around £30 million, but Arsenal value Fabregas at closer to £40 million. Fabregas has been a talisman of the Arsenal side and has almost singlehandedly won games for the Gunners in the absence of key players Robin van Persie and Theo Walcott for much of this last campaign.

Arsenal stuttered many times this season, so it is a credit to the team and Fabregas in particular that they managed to secure third place and were title contenders at various points of the season. In truth though, a Premier League title would have flattered the Gunners, who at their best play some of the most fluent and delightful football in the league, but whose consistency suffers with a lack of depth in their squad.

It is little surprise then that a player of Fabregas’ precocious and abundant talent would look elsewhere to play his first team football. Barcelona are one of the most exciting and successful teams in European football, the temptation must be as irresistible as the football.

Key to the proceedings will be whether the two clubs can strike a deal in a player exchange, assuming Barcelona are unwilling to stump up the full £40 million asking price. Yaya Toure, brother of ex-Gunner Kolo Toure is a possibility, but a report from Goal.com would indicate that Toure is not interested in a move to London.

Arsenal legend Thierry Henry has often remarked about a possible return to the Emirates, but there are rumours that Henry has his sights on America and Major League Soccer next season. Either way, Arsenal should consign themselves to the fact that Fabregas is an ex-player. Much like Cristiano Ronaldo’s departure to Real Madrid, once a player has made his mind to go, it’s simply a matter of playing the numbers game.
