Federer Grand Slams his Way to History
Roger Federer is being hailed as the greatest player of all time following his win against Robin Soderling.
Swiss superstar Roger Federer defeated Robin Soderling yesterday to win his first French Open, becoming only the sixth man in history to win all four Grand Slams.
The weather in Paris was rainy and grey, but it must have been one of the brightest days in Federer’s career as he secured the elusive Roland Garros. It took Federer just one hour and 55 minutes to destroy Soderling in straight sets and claim the title.
This was the tenth time Federer has beaten Soderling, who gracefully conceded that he’d lost to “the best player in history,” according to BBC News.
The 6-1 7-6 6-4 victory puts Federer in the esteemed company of Don Budge, Roy Emerson, Fred Perry, Andre Agassi and Rod Laver, the previous players to lay claim to the big four of tennis titles. As he was presented the Coupe des Mousquetaires trophy by Agassi himself, Federer gushed: “That he gives me the trophy, it’s too much, it was very nice of him to come here this year. He told me it seems like it’s destiny for you, you deserve it.”

Having previously lost three finals to Rafael Nadal, the current number one seed, this victory has now led to Federer being touted as one of the greatest tennis players of all time, not only by Soderling but also Agassi who said to Sky Sports: “It ends the discussion of where he fits in the history of the game.”
After the match Federer was in naturally high spirits, he said “It was probably my greatest victory, I was under big pressure. I did it and it’s phenomenal. It was great to be on the podium as a winner for a change. It takes away so much pressure. Now, I can play in peace for the rest of my career”.
