Ice-Cool Federer and His Volcanic Racquet for Wimbledon
Tennis racquet technology is heading in some unusual directions, so here’s a look at some of the top seeds at Wimbledon and their weapons of choice.
Turns out the best player ever to have lived uses a tennis racquet made of volcanic rock… some sort of handicap so he doesn’t get bored perhaps?
Let’s have a look at some top Wimbledon seeds and find out what exactly racquet manufacturers are up to.
Roger Federer
Racquet: Wilson Six One Tour BLX (355g)
The best player ever has a new stick for 2010. His Wilson racquet is built from volcanic rock! Basalt is spun into fine gold fibers and blended with Wilson’s ‘Karophite Black’ graphite. The Basalt provides vibration dampening and the graphite is light and rigid. Wilson manipulates graphite at the nanoscopic (very small) level to make Karophite Black, fusing molecules together for strength.
Novak Djokovic
Racquet: Head YouTek Speed Pro (335g)
After creating a stir by switching from a Wilson to a Head racquet just before the Australian Open, Djokovic seems to have done more than OK with his new racquet. The Head YouTek Speed Pro is fairly heavy at 335g, and features Head’s d3o ‘smart’ technology. d3o is a foam built into the shaft of the racquet which stiffens on harder shots for power and absorbs energy on softer shots for better feel.
David Ferrer
Racquet: Prince Ozone Tour MP (310g)
Ferrer’s Prince racquet uses the company’s O3 technology, constructing the frame from a series of arches. Strings are bedded in these arches, giving a huge sweetspot and also allowing the frame to cut through the air for fast strokes.
Rafael Nadal
Racquet: Babolat AeroProDrive (300g)
Nadal’s bat is suited to his fast groundstrokes, being lighter than your average pro racquet. Nadal’s Babolat is made from a hybrid of the usual carbon fibers with tungsten filaments for better energy return and feel. The AeroProDrive also features the Cortex System – basically a V-shaped shock absorber inserted between the handle and the frame.
Andy Murray
Racquet: Head YouTek Radical Pro (315g)
Another Head player, Murray’s racquet has the same technology as Djokovic’s, but is lighter and more powerful to suit his dynamic style. The larger head size and thicker beams provide extra punch.
