Football World Cup 2010 South Africa Draw

Final 32 teams drawn in eight groups for football’s greatest prize.

Today millions of football fans tuned in to watch the draw for the FIFA World Cup 2010 in South Africa.

Two hundred nations have battled for over two years to make the cut to the last 32, today the fate of those last 32 was decided as the final groups were set in Cape Town for the first ever World Cup to be hosted in Africa.

The eight groups are represented by the eight seeded teams:

Group A: South Africa’s Group

South Africa, Mexico, Uruguay, France

Group B: Argentina’s Group

Argentina, Nigeria, South Korea, Greece

Group C: England’s Group

England, USA, Algeria, Slovenia

Group D: Germany’s Group

Germany, Australia, Serbia, Ghana

Group E: Holland’s Group

Holland, Denmark, Japan, Cameroon

Group F: Italy’s Group

Italy, Paraguay, New Zealand, Slovakia

Group G: Brazil’s Group

Brazil, North Korea, Ivory Coast, Portugal

Group H: Spain’s Group

Spain, Switzerland, Honduras, Chile

Hollywood honey and South African starlet Charlize Theron made an arduous 90 minutes of drawing balls pass much quicker, as she co-hosted the event live alongside FIFA Secretary General Jerome Valcke.

Former South African president Nelson Mandela said in a video message: “In Africa, soccer enjoys great popularity and has a particular place in the hearts of people. We feel privileged and humbled that South Africa has been given the singular honour of being the host country.”

The inevitable “Group of Death” for this World Cup is surely Group G, with Brazil drawing Portugal, Ivory Coast and North Korea. Brazil, the favourites to win the competition will play arguably the strongest African nation participating, and the best unseeded team, Portugal.

England got a relatively kind draw, with USA providing the only real concern. Algeria and Slovenia should be comfortable victories for Fabio Capello’s team.

The first match will kick off at Johannesburg at the monstrous 94,700 capacity stadium at Soccer City. The first match on Friday 11 June 2010 will be between South Africa and Mexico.

England always play better against tough opposition. I hope we draw Portugal in our group, at least then they can’t knock us out in the quarter final.

Host nations always do well in the World Cup (see S. Korea in 2002). I expect South Africa to at least make it to the quarter finals.

Please South Africa destroy France, the cheating bastards.

32 qualifying nations = 32 cultures = how many cheats?

At the 1986 World Cup it was Maradona with the “Hand of God” and in the run up to the 2010 World Cup it was Thierry Henry’s ‘Hand of Gaul’ or ‘Hand of Frog’.
Unfortunately for some cultures cheating is not such a big deal.

PS. FIFA should have more balls!

Why did the Irish not ask to replay the game against Gerogia having cheated them shamefully?

Ireland – country of elegance and fair play (oops, I forgot the intelligence… ).

The strongest group here is the group with Brazil, Ivory Coast, Portugal and North Korea, but I will like Ivory Coast and Brazil to qualify in that group. Another dangerous group is Argentina, Nigeria, South Korea and Greece, but am wishing my country Nigeria and Argentina to qualify but it’s not easy in that team sure.

I agree with you that Group G is very strong. I predict that Ivory Coast and Brazil will move on to Eight-Finals, but I would love it if Portugal moved on with Brazil. :D Good luck to all teams though! It should be interesting to see who wins this 19th World Cup.

Am wishing African team to play semi finals. I believe Ivory Coast can make us proud because they’ve the best team in African now, with the likes of Touré, Drogba, Keïta, etc.

Steven Pienaar is sweet, nice and quick and crosses well. :) I think S.A. looked fine in the warm-up matches and held their own against Brazil for long periods of time and had some good scoring chances. Let’s see the Va Va Vooms… Voom off early!

    Come on England and S.A.!
