Haiti Earthquake Prepares for Death Toll of Thousands
Caribbean disaster worst earthquake in over 200 years.
The death toll could rise to thousands as rescue workers scramble to help those affected in the horrific aftermath of yesterday’s earthquake in Haiti.
The Caribbean Island was struck by a magnitude 7.0 earthquake in the early evening local time, destroying many of the major landmarks of the island at Port-au-Prince including the National Presidential Palace and the Port-au-Prince Cathedral.
The initial tremor occurred about 10 miles outside of the city with several aftershocks measuring above magnitude 5.0. The earthquake has already caused one hospital collapse, a huge setback for the thousands of people in need of medical attention in the wake of the worst natural disaster to hit the country in two centuries.
Raymond Alcide Joseph, Haiti’s ambassador to the US described the events as a “catastrophe of major proportions” in an interview with CNN.
The death toll has already jumped into the hundreds, and could escalate to thousands as more people stranded under to rubble await rescue. “People are trying to dig victims out with flashlights, I think hundreds of casualties would be a serious understatement,” Rachmani Domersant of the Food for the Poor charity told The Daily Telegraph.
Aid is being sent from across the globe to assist the struggling country. The US has already set up a number of appeals to raise money for Haiti, especially in Florida where some 275,000 Haitians live in the local community. The US coast guard has organised for cutters and aircraft to be sent to the Caribbean to help the rescue effort, according to the BBC.
A team of 61 British firefighters are also looking to secure a flight to Haiti to offer their help in rescuing trapped casualties.

I pray for the victims of this tragedy!

OMGshh! My best friend’s daddy is there. She hasn’t talked to him in like 5 years or more and she just went to talk to him like 2 days ago and she was crying and I was there. All this stuff is really sad. Can’t believe that I was crying with my friend but we are going to see him when all this is not happening. I’m going to help them get money. Sad & crying. So many things are happening in this world. OMG, I wish I could take all these people and help them a lot. I wish I had a big house so I could take all these people to my house and take care of them. I hope they all come to Florida. <3karina

Hey, they might put the kids who lost their parents up for adoption. IDK if they will open it up to the US though. I hope they are okay.

I’m really sad and don’t get me wrong but I lift them up for all of this because it looks like this boy lost everything and how strong are they for not, like, saying, “Oh poor me,” but you know, like, many of us would just be like that but he don’t look like he’s doing that. I bet he is thinking, “What am I going to do now?” and many of us would not be thinking that. I know I wouldn’t be. We need to realize how much we have. Heather <3
