Heroes End for Law and Order, Scrubs and FlashForward
US networks axe shows in epic schedule rejig.
US TV networks put the final nail in the coffin of a number of major TV shows this week as the fall line-ups were revealed.
NBC confirmed the axing of both Law & Order and Heroes as they try to rejuvenate their flagging audience figures. “It came down to the wire – we had to lock in the schedule. These decisions were made,” The Washington Post quoted NBC programming chief Angela Bromstad.

After 20 seasons, Law & Order has become an integral and comfortingly familiar part of NBC’s schedule, and whilst fans will be able to keep continue following the Law & Order format in a new spin-off franchise Law & Order Los Angeles, the many will be sad to see the original series cast off by NBC.

There will be fewer tearful farewells for Heroes. Rarely (if ever) has a show with so much scope, talent and brilliance from the opening season spiralled cataclysmically into mediocre drivel. Four seasons in and Heroes has floundered, with talks now surrounding how to tie up the storylines effectively either in a final mini-series or a movie.

The news comes just weeks after Fox announced that Jack Bauer would not be returning to save the world from terrorists (again) for the ninth time. After eight of the longest days of his life, Bauer has earned a break and will not be returning for Season Nine of 24.

Sci-fi adventure FlashForward has also been axed by rival network ABC. Had Joseph Fiennes and Co. really been smart, perhaps they would have been able to foresee ABC’s move as FlashForward‘s blackout became permanent.

Scrubs has also finally flatlined, although quite how the series was supposed to continue without the huge band aid of Zach Braff to hold the show together is anyone’s guess. The big winner of all of these slayings seems to be Mr Explosions himself, Jerry Bruckheimer. Bruckheimer got the green light for more CSI: Miami as well as a new series called The Chase.

I am a big fan of these shows in NZ and sad to see them go.
But I suppose it’s Hollywood.
There’s always the radio.
Why didn’t they can American Idol?
I hate to see something entertaining get canned. What’s even worse is when they get you hooked and then give no series ending… just a last show. Could you at least do that for us, ABC?
I know many people who are big fans of these shows, especially Heroes, FlashForward (which has barely started) and Scrubs. There are many worse shows, so why stop these ones?
Despite Heroes losing the plot since the end of season 1, I had high hopes that something good would come of it. I hope the talk of a movie or miniseries to end it all actually comes to fruition. I personally would favour the miniseries.
FlashForward started with a great idea then had a dozen or so really dull episodes. I think that it has gotten quite good and exciting now and I was really looking forward to the next few seasons.
Every show has a certain amount of devout followers and for these people it is terrible when a show is cancelled.
I think that if a show gets past the pilot and is aired in earnest, the producers should give the existing fans some degree of a send-off.
A miniseries should be provided if the show is just cancelled without any degree of finality. When a series is started, the pilot has been watched and the show has been given the green light, the producers should have a contract stating that if the show does come to an untimely end, they are
obligated to produce a miniseries to bring the story to a satisfactory conclusion.
I love all these shows… Well, not Law and Order, but the other four I love!!! Scrubs is one of the funniest, yet sad show’s over! 24 is brilliant in the way they have the real time (or is it just Sutherland leaving?). FlashForward has been such an excellent show so far!! The day of the blackout is next week as well. I can understand that it won’t go on forever because of the basis of the storyline being the blackout, but surely more storylines around it can be made. And as for Heroes, OMG!!! They are awesome!! I haven’t had a chance to watch series four yet but OMG!!!!!! Everything is so screwed up! Can’t they get rid off the real crap instead of these brilliancies?!?!?
Just watched the finale of FlashForward. Surely they can’t leave it at that? That finale was so intense, it actually had me at the edge my seat and it’s hard to do that to me. The way they left it was a bit too ambiguous I think. No… not even that, it’s not really been left open for interpretation, if I’m honest. What on earth happened?! I NEED to know. :p
