High Street Salads More Fatty than McDonald's

Big Mac and fries healthier option than some lunchtime salads.

Dieters trying to be good at lunchtime will be shocked to discover that some high street ready-made salads contain more calories and fat than a McDonald’s Big Mac meal.

Consumer watchdog Which? reviewed 20 salads from the major UK high street outlets and supermarkets to see whether salads were truly the healthy option at lunchtime. Retailers Morrisons and Marks & Spencer came off the worst in the review, with salads that were decidedly unhealthy.

The Smedleys Atlantic Prawn Marie Rose Salad from Morrisons contains 855 calories and 66.3g of fat. By comparison, a McDonald’s Big Mac with medium fries contains 820 calories and 40g of fat. The M&S Pasta with Tomato & Basil British Chicken weighed in at a hefty 760 calories and 46g of fat.

According to the Which? report, the Smedleys salad contains 70 per cent of a male’s daily fat allowance, whereas the M&S meal had three fold more saturated fat and salt than one of its high street competitors. The calorific content in most of the salads examined came from mayonnaise dressing, creamy sources and fatty extras such as cheese or croutons.

Defending its product line, M&S commented that its ready-made pasta dish, “was not a salad and is not labelled as a salad, so we are confused as to why Which? have included it in their salads report,” according to the BBC.

Which? recommended that consumers should read the packaging carefully on all products before buying. “At a glance, the Tesco Tuna Layered Salad contains 275 calories and 20.5g fat. But looking closely at the label shows this is for half the pack.” Eating the whole salad is worth twice the calories. Salads with a variety of colours are more likely to contain more of your recommended five-a-day fruit and veg according to the report.
