India Remembers Mumbai Terror Victims
First anniversary of the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks pays homage to the slain.
India paid a tearful tribute the victims of last year’s Mumbai terrorist attacks on the painful first anniversary since the atrocity.
A year ago today, 10 Pakistani militants holed up hundreds of innocents hostage for three days, killing 170 people and wounding more than 300. The terrorist attack caused a fracture in peace negotiations between India and Pakistan, widening the rift between the two hostile nations.
Outside the Jewish centre, residents lit candles for the deceased and those who continue to suffer today because of the brutal assault on Mumbai. At the Trident Oberoi hotel, one of the many targets of the attacks a wreath of lilies was laid in a poignant memorial.
Karambir Kang, general manager of the Taj hotel, another target of the attacks told the BBC of his personal tragedy as he lost his wife and two children last year. Mr Kang stoically continued his work at the hotel however, unwilling to let terrorism conquer his life.
“We did reopen the hotel 21 days after the incident. All of our staff returned to work and made it possible. The whole world took notice. The aura of the hotel has gone up to a different level post-26/11,” Mr Kang revealed.
“You talk about running away from the place where the tragedy happened, about running away from grief. What do you run away from? You have to conquer your mind. I had to come back to the hotel to do it,” he said.
Tributes will continue throughout the day of mourning throughout India as a country confronts its grief.

Even though America is hurting, we still give the most worldwide. China owns our debts but, heck, trillions and trillions are from loaning to poorer countries. Wal-Mart is a heck of a giver.
