iPad Killer Tablet in Development by Google and Verizon

Verizon Wireless have confirmed they are working with Google on a new tablet to rival the iPad.

Google and Verizon Wireless have announced a new venture together to design a tablet which can tackle Apple’s iPad.

It was only a matter of time before digital giant Google saw how well Apple was doing from the iPad and thought: “We should be getting some of that tablet action.” Google is big enough and rich enough that when a good idea comes along, they have the resources to make their own bigger, better Google version as the video below comically points out.

Verizon are also keen to tackle their big competitors in the mobile network arena, AT&T, so there is a powerful motivation for the joint venture to out-do the Apple/AT&T partnership that is flourishing with the iPad.

Speaking to The Wall Street Journal, Verizon’s chief executive Lowell McAdam said: “We’re working on tablets together, for example. We’re looking at all the things Google has in its archives that we could put on a tablet to make it a great experience.”

The CEO refused to reveal any details about the tablet device, but a key question will be which operating system the device uses. Google Chrome OS is going after Microsoft Windows in the computer market, whilst Android is pushing in the mobile market against rival mobile operating systems from Apple, RIM and Nokia.

Research from the NPD Group shows that Google’s Android is now the second most popular OS behind RIM’s BlackBerry range. Android devices now account for 28 per cent of the smartphone market, overcoming iPhone’s 21 per cent hold.
