Chipped PS3s will allow users to play old PS2 games on their consoles.

The man who managed to jailbreak Apple’s iPhone, George Hotz, has turned his attentions to Sony’s seemingly impenetrable PlayStation 3, eventually hacking the console on Friday after five weeks of continued attacks.

In a blog post, Mr Hotz, better known as geohot online announced: “I have read/write access to the entire system memory, and HV level access to the processor. In other words, I have hacked the PS3.”

PlayStation’s main console rivals, the Nintendo Wii and Xbox 360 have both been hacked for some time, but the PS3′s “simple hardware cleverly applied” has remained an elusive bastion for hackers. Despite breaking through the system after sustained attempts, geohot had great admiration for Sony’s system: “3 years, 2 months, 11 days…thats a pretty secure system,” he wrote.

Mr Hotz gained online notoriety in 2007 when he managed to hack Apple’s software to break the iPhone. As a result, users could chip their iPhone to run on any wireless network at a time when AT&T had exclusivity on Apple’s product.

The new hack will mean PS3 users will be able to unlock their consoles to expand the capabilities of their machines. Whilst this opens the possibility of running pirated games on the PS3, as well as alternative media players such as the popular VLC, perhaps the most obvious change will allow users to play their PS2 games through the PS3.

This raises the question: Why did Sony decide to ditch backwards compatibility for the PS3? Early models could play PS2 games, and certainly one of the nice features of the PS2 console was the ability to play old PS games. Users like backwards compatibility, they like going back to old games without necessarily having to dig out the old console, so why did Sony stop?

Sony has not made a comment yet on the geohot hack, but if a compatibility mod becomes widely available, Sony will surely have to consider reinstating backwards compatibility on new PS3 systems.

That is good. I like hacking my things. I can do things that I could not do before. That’s awesome, for real.

Sony removed the retro-compatibility because it is still selling PS2s and with a good margin in countries like Japan for example.
I’m sure the PS2 compatibility would have been brought later on with a firmware update.
