Kapow! Dark Knight captures 5 Awards

Batman film wins each category at the People’s Choice Awards.

This week saw stars of US TV, film and music celebrated at the 35th Annual People’s Choice Awards.

The runaway winner of the evening was undoubtedly Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight which scooped five awards and won every category it was nominated for.

Christopher Nolan was the creative force behind the recent resurgence of the flagging Batman franchise. Back in 1997, Batman had become a mockery of a superhero.

Director Joel Schumacher had all but destroyed the image of the caped crusader with camp overtones and ridiculous gadgets. The less said about the “Bat-credit card” the better.

Nolan wiped the slate clean with Batman Begins which portrayed a darker, edgier Batman. Christian Bale created a Batman that was real and believable, a hero that could be empathised with. The Dark Knight built on the solid foundations of Batman Begins and surpassed it in every way.

The second Nolan Batman instalment won the award this week for favourite cast, best movie, best action movie and best superhero. The chemistry between Christian Bale’s Batman and Heath Ledger’s Joker won the film its fifth award for top on-screen match-up.

Other winners on the night included Kate Hudson, Will Smith, Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie, Adam Sandler, Robin Williams and Reese Witherspoon.

Producer Charles Roven said he was very excited about the prospect of the People’s Choice Awards: “It’s always incredibly rewarding when the people vote,” he said to mtv.com.

When the awards were announced Christian Bale dedicated the achievements of the film to the late Heath Ledger who died unexpectedly in a drug overdose accident last year.

“Thank you very, very much,” said Bale at his acceptance speech, “And on behalf of all of the cast from the movie, thank you very much to the fans. Here’s to Heath. Thank you.”

The Dark Knight is a supreme piece of cinema history, made more poignant by the untimely death of Ledger. The awards are by no means sympathy votes however, The Dark Knight richly deserves the accolades it has received on the strength of the film, not the strength of the human tragedy.

With the Oscars not far away, the People’s Choice Awards is unlikely to be the last set of trophies The Dark Knight wins this year.
