Light Emitting Wallpaper Could Replace Bulbs by 2020

New organic LED technology glowing ember of hope for carbon reduction.

A new light emitting wallpaper could be the answer to global warming as rooms of the future could replace bulbs entirely in place of specially formulated flexible LED surfaces.

The technology is being developed by LOMOX Ltd, a welsh start-up which won a grant from the Carbon Trust of £454,000 ($720,000) to bring organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs) to the commercial market.

The new prototype has two main advantages over current lighting devices. Firstly, OLED technology is incredibly malleable, which means it can be coated onto almost any surface from wallpaper, to a flat-screen TV to a sofa. Secondly, OLEDs are highly energy efficient, reducing the amount of energy used to light houses.

Approximately 17 per cent of all electricity used in the UK is spent on lighting. The company developing the OLEDs believe they could produce lighting 2.5 times more efficient than today’s energy efficient bulbs. What’s more, OLEDs give a more natural light than the current halogen and low energy bulbs.

Director of innovations at the Carbon Trust, Mark Williamson told The Guardian: “Lighting is a major producer of carbon emissions. This technology has the potential to produce ultra-efficient lighting for a wide range of applications, tapping into a huge global market. We’re now on the look-out for other technologies that can save carbon and be a commercial success.”

Estimates predict that 2.5 million tonnes of CO2 could be saved if all modern lighting was replaced with OLEDs by 2020. The future’s bright for wallpaper, a future which could be very illuminating indeed for green schemes.

Forget AGW, but I’d buy this idea in a flash. The idea is great, seriously non-directional lighting is something people try to achieve all the time.

Finally a company actually looking to use OLED for large scale application rather than an 11-inch flat panel.

For those who are old enough, remember the kitchen walls in Total Recall, scenery one minute, then TV picture the next. Imagine never having to redecorate! Switch of a button and instantly change from magnolia to light cream…

This is where governments should be sending our tax money – to a technologist with the goal of a real product not a climatologist with a consensus theory.
