Danish toy maker Lego are entering the music player and camera market.

The world’s largest construction toy manufacturer is turning its attention to an entirely new product group; electronics, and more specifically, music players and digital cameras.

The radical departure from plastic building blocks to electronic gadgets for kids will be undertaken along with an American firm, Las Vegas based Digital Blue.

Lego aims to produce walkie-talkies, MP3 players, alarm clocks and digital cameras, hoping the new addition will bring the company’s toys to life in “an all-new way for its fans”.

Although the new additions will be fully functional electronic devices, it will be difficult on first glance to accept the devices as real, and not just toys.

In the typical Lego fashion, the products will have the distinct building block look. Avid Lego enthusiasts need to take note that the products are not able to come apart.

Lego Group vice president of licencing, Jill Wilfert said: “Our entrance into the youth electronics space will enable our fans to express themselves through photos, videos and music, while displaying their enthusiasm for one of the world’s all-time favourite toys.”

The line of products is aimed at children between the ages of seven and 11. However, it is believed that because of the iconic design and retro look, the products will appeal to an older audience as well.

Expect to see many a twenty-something walking down the street in a smart suit and a Lego Mobile. Lego collectors will most certainly want to get their hands on some of these products.

The company has in recent years focused its attention on producing more modern toys, for tech-savvy kids. This has brought about the robotic Mindstorm range of toys, as well as the Technic range, aimed at lovers of vehicles.
