Spanish midfielder sold to Real Madrid for £30 million.
Liverpool have made a killing on Spanish midfielder Xabi Alonso, selling him on to Real Madrid for an extraordinary £30 million, pushing the summer spending at the Bernabeu over £200 million.
There is no doubt that Alonso’s sturdy sureness in the holding role of Liverpool’s midfield, not to mention his excellent playmaking skills and ability to free up Steven Gerrard as the roaming forward will be missed. However, with £19 million profit, Liverpool can afford to secure an able replacement in Roma’s Alberto Aquilani and have significant change left over to invest in other players.
With such a sound business move, it seems baffling that Liverpool fans and the press would turn on manager Rafael Benitez for selling a player at such an excellent price. Questions are being asked though – “Beginning of the end for Liverpool FC?” TVNZ titled their piece, whilst the Daily Mirror opted for “Liverpool’s Money For Nothing,” believing that Benitez may have “sold Anfield’s title dreams down the river.”
The reaction is puzzling. Whilst Alonso is certainly a fine player, he is by no means irreplaceable, and not the lynchpin of the Liverpool side. The twin talismans of Gerrard and Torres are the players that turn a talented Liverpool side into Premier League challengers. With the sale of Alonso, Benitez looks set to bring the additional Spanish flair of David Villa to Anfield, a player who could really make a difference to Liverpool’s chances of winning the English league after 20 years of drought.
Benitez is a steady hand guiding Liverpool, he knows what he is doing and should be rewarded with a little faith from fans. Alonso will be missed, but not for long. When the goals come raining in with business as usual at Anfield, hopefully the Kop elite will remember a deal well struck by their manager.
