Mel Gibson’s wife Files for FREEDOM
Braveheart actor to separate from his wife after 28 years of marriage.
Mel Gibson’s wife Robyn has announced her plans to divorce her husband after nearly three decades of married life together.
One of Hollywood’s golden couples has apparently collapsed, as it was revealed that the long-standing marriage had fractured, and that Mr and Mrs Gibson had come to “irreconcilable differences” as they announced their split.
The couple were wed in June 1980, and almost 29 years later, Mrs Gibson is expected to benefit from a huge divorce settlement. In the more innocent days of the 80s, fewer Hollywood A-listers insisted on the now inevitable prenuptial agreement, and the Gibson marriage is believed to be without the legal safety net.
If that proves to be the case, then Robyn Gibson could be entitled to half of the fortune amassed by the Braveheart star. Details of the Oscar-winning actor’s fortune differ from source to source. The BBC claims Gibson is worth $640 million (£432 million), whereas the Daily Mail claims Gibson could have as much as $950 million (£640 million) to his name.
Gibson, a devout Catholic, has had seven children with his wife since they were wed. Six of the seven children are over the age of 18, but Mrs Gibson is believed to have filed for custody of the couple’s youngest son Tom, aged 10.
Although nothing has been confirmed, rumours suggest that the “irreconcilable differences” cited for the divorce are a direct result of Mel’s questionable relationship with Russian musician Oksana. Mr Gibson signed the Russian beauty to his record label Icon, but furiously denied that his association with her was anything but professional.
In a statement the couple jointly announced: “Throughout our marriage and separation we have always strived to maintain the privacy and integrity of our family and will continue to do so,” according to the BBC.
