Michael Jackson Facebook and Twitter Top Trends on Google 2009
Google zeitgeist list unveiled with the top searches of the year in the world’s biggest search engine.
Google released their zeitgeist list for 2009 yesterday as it observed “the spirit of the times” in search. With seven out of ten online searches being made in Google on the web, the zeitgeist serves as a good dip-test of what the online population is interested in.
This year’s hot topics were dominated by social media sites, with Facebook, Tuenti (Spain’s answer to Facebook) and Twitter all making the top five fastest rising global trends.
Perhaps unsurprisingly the death of pop music’s most recognisable icon, Michael Jackson, led to the King of Pop topping the Google index. Jackson’s global appeal coupled with the manner of his tragic death and spreading conspiracy theories made him the most searched term in the world.

In other entertainment, Japanese anime cartoons are also taking a hold in the global consciousness with two entries in top 10 fastest rising entertainment category.
“Anime online” was ranked at number eight ahead of actress Natasha Richardson and Lady Gaga’s hit song Poker Face. Meanwhile, ninja anime Naruto was ranked in fourth place just behind Michael Jackson, Transformers and Eminem.

Twitter is growing an exceptional legacy after just three years online. Ranked fourth in the fastest rising global index in Google, Twitter was actually more popular than Michael Jackson in the US, for both Google searches and Google mobile search. Twitter was also named the 2009 word of the year by the Global Language Monitor.
Facebook hit a new benchmark in social networking this year as it surpassed the 300 million user mark. Facebook has destroyed competition from MySpace and is now the most popular social network in the world.

The falling stars of last year’s zeitgeist that did not feature so well this year included the Beijing Olympics, Heath Ledger, Barack Obama, Nintendo’s Wii and drug-fuelled sing star Amy Winehouse.

Michael was the best artist at all times. I miss him very much. It’s a pity he passed too soon. I am very sad with his death. I’ll never forget him, he is in my heart forever.
