Google Earth 5.0 celebrates forty years after first moon landing.

It’s one small step for Google, but a giant leap for Google Earth. Forty years ago to the day, Neil Armstrong took the first steps of mankind on the moon. In memory of the landmark moment in history, Google Earth have launched into space with a 3D mapping of the moon.

Moon in Google Earth is the latest downloadable addon from Google which allows users to explore the moon’s surface as never before. As well as being able to explore the virtual moonscape and explore the major topographical features of the moon’s surface, cyberspace astronauts will be able to observe original exploring charts and planning data used from the Apollo 11 mission.

Google Earth’s customary push-pin markers point out key spots on the surface, including the site landing spot of Apollo 11, the area where the Stars and Stripes was erected, and numerous other artefact sites from other satellite missions from the US, Soviet Union, China, Japan, India and the EU are marked out for exploration.

Google’s Michael Weiss-Malik said: “We’re giving hundreds of millions of people around the world unprecedented access to an interactive 3D presentation of the Apollo missions.” Guided tours from celebrated astronauts Buzz Aldrin and Jack Schmitt are also included with eye-witness accounts of their lunar experiences.

US President Barack Obama met the three inspirational astronauts, Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins from the original moon landing four decades ago. Mr Obama, who was seven at the time of the moon landing, praised the courage and heroism of the three pioneers: “I think that all of us recall the moment in which mankind finally was untethered from this planet,” he said according to BBC news.
