Nokia Shocks Users with 14 Million Chargers Recalled

Nokia worried about Connecting People… to the mains electricity.

Mobile phone manufacturer Nokia has been forced to recall 14 million phone chargers in Europe and America amid fears that they could electrocute customers.

In a press release from the company, Nokia said: “We have determined that the plastic covers of the affected chargers could come loose and separate, exposing the charger’s internal components and potentially posing an electric shock hazard if certain internal components are touched while the charger is plugged into a live socket.”

Nokia were keen to stress that no-one had been hurt and that the recall was a precautionary measure to ensure customers safety.

The chargers came from AC-3U and AC-3E model types manufactured by Chinese sub-contractor BYD between 15 June 2009 and 9 August 2009. Similarly AC-4U models made between 13 April 2009 and 9 August 2009 could be faulty and will be replaced by Nokia free of charge.

Although similar chargers were supplied with Nokia phones before April this year, Nokia said that there was no danger of a problem if customers had bought their phone from Nokia before 13 April 2009.

British Nokia owners are safe provided they bought their phone in the UK, as the distinctive 3-socket plug is not one of the models which are being recalled. However, if the phone was brought abroad with a foreign charger users should check their chargers carefully.

Nokia have done everything to try and curb the story before the faulty chargers become a debacle. The company will be desperate to avoid the kind of scandal which rocked Apple earlier this year when an iPod exploded because of a battery overheating and when Hewlett-Packard had to recall 70,000 notebook laptops because of battery problems.

Just how many “accidents” do you need to learn that you can never really trust the Chinese in trade?
