North Korea have fired two test missiles according to reports.
The government of North Korea, after apparently staging a nuclear weapon test, has test-fired two missiles, according to reports.
These actions have not gone unnoticed and a UN council will today start discussions regarding sanctions against North Korea and its leader Kim Jong-il. A 15-strong security meeting will address the worries after Yonhap, a South Korean news agency, released news of the missile launch.
President of the United States, Barack Obama, condemned the tests as: “a blatant violation of international law”. Speaking at the White House last night he also said that
North Korea: “will not find security and respect through threats and illegal weapons,” reported The Guardian. He went on to say: “North Korea’s nuclear and ballistic missile programmes pose a grave threat to the peace and security of the world, and I strongly condemn their reckless action”.
President Obama is said to have contacted the governments of South Korea and Japan, the two areas most worried by the actions of North Korea, to offer his support regarding the matter. South Korea also formally announced that it would be willing to join a US security operations today.
The US is keen to intercept a number of ships suspected of ferrying destructive weapons to North Korea. However, North Korea has previously threatened that such action could lead to a declaration of war.
Japan, the other nation most concerned about the development of North Korea’s weapons, said it would call for new resolutions following the missile launch. British Prime Minister Gordon also gave comment, calling the launch “erroneous, misguided and a danger to the world”.
