Obama Marvels at Spider-Man Comic
President-elect Barack Obama gets his own superhero comic story.
Spider-Man is the latest person to lend their support to the next President of the United States, Barack Obama.
Marvel Comics have drawn a tribute issue to the President-elect in The Amazing Spider-Man #583. The story centres on our American superhero (Spider-Man not Obama) rescuing the President-elect during his Inauguration ceremony.
The webslinger interrupts a plot to overthrow Obama when shape-shifting villain the Chameleon impersonates the politician. Spider-man dives straight into the action and takes out the bad guy.
The President-to-be revealed he was a big Spider-Man fan as a boy and used to collect the comics fervently in his youth. Marvel’s editor-in-chief Joe Quesada said doing an honorary comic strip for Mr Obama was “natural” after learning the next President was a devotee.
Mr Quesada said: “It was really, really cool to see that we had a geek in the White House. We’re all thrilled with that.”
One of the beauties of Spider-Man is that unlike Batman or Superman, the comic is grounded in reality and takes place in the real city of New York. Spider-man was praised for its portrayal of the events of 9/11 and has previously featured President Nixon in the seventies.
The Obama issue goes on sale next Wednesday in the US priced $3.99.
