Obama Proposes New International Nuclear Policy
Central uranium enrichment hubs could end development of nuclear weapons.
The chief science advisor to Barack Obama has advised the President to propose a new international policy to prevent nuclear proliferation.
Preventing the spread of nuclear technologies which could be diverted to create nuclear weapons has been a cause Professor Holdren has pledged a lifetime to, as a leading member of the anti-proliferation group Pugwash Conferences on Science and World Affairs.
In his capacity as advisor to the Obama Administration, Professor Holdren is recommending that all uranium enrichment be carried out by an approved international body.
The move would effectively enforce countries to relinquish their unilateral control over uranium enriching and submit to central international centres controlled by an amalgamation of nuclear physicists.
Speaking at a conference in London, Professor Holdren said that nuclear enrichment was a risky business and that as an international community: “we should not allow nations on their own to be doing it,” reported The Times. Instead, Professor Holdren proposes that: “all enrichment would take place in internationally-operated facilities in which multiple nations kept their eye on each other.”
Such an international scheme would place nuclear enrichment under a controlled environment, allowing low-enriched uranium to be produced for nuclear power plants as a source of fuel, without risking the subtle development of weapons-grade uranium. Currently the governing body for nuclear enrichment is the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), however, signing up to IAEA guidelines are voluntary and countries are not bound by laws governing enrichment of nuclear material.
President Obama is yet to commit to Professor Holdren’s proposal, but if he does then America will be a driving force in making uranium enrichment an internationally controlled process. After 40 years of anti-proliferation campaigning, Professor Holdren believes progress is in sight: “I think much of the world is now ready for this and I think it will be considered by the Obama Administration as a possible approach.”

Nuclear proliferation is the demand for present environment. So I appreciate the step taken by Mr Obama in this regard.
What an idiot…
