Dream of world free of nuclear weapons takes a step closer to reality.

Can Barack Obama really convince the world’s nuclear superpowers that complete nuclear disarmament is the way forward?

President Obama certainly showed how serious he is about taking the United States down this path as he led the United Nations Security Council summit for the first time in his presidency, the first time in any presidency for that matter.

Last April, Mr Obama revealed his dreams of a world free of nuclear weapons, but this week hyped rally speeches turned to serious discussion as Obama presented his drafted resolution outlining plans of non-proliferation and disarmament.

The unanimous backing of the resolution from the top five nuclear states – America, Britain, China, France and Russia is a strong indicator that Obama has managed to galvanise the world players to really affect some of the change that he so desperately craves.

The resolution rests on three main principles. Firstly, those states with nuclear weapons must demonstrate a willingness to disarm with more than simply words. Secondly, the Nuclear Non-proliferation Treaty (NPT) must be supported and strengthened. Thirdly, the sharing of nuclear knowledge for peaceful means must be encouraged and reinforced by the core nuclear members.

In his outlining of the resolution, President Obama said: “We must demonstrate that international law is not an empty promise, and that treaties must be enforced,” according to the Wall Street Journal. Looking to lead by example, America and Russia have begun negotiations on a new treaty which will see both countries reduce their nuclear arms capabilities.

Although little was said about the impending threat of nuclear armament from North Korea and Iran, the plans outlined this week are steps in the right direction for a reduction in nuclear arms.
