PS3 Purchasers More Interested in Blu-ray than Games
Exclusive games least motivating factor for gamers interested in acquiring a PS3.
The top motivating factor for gamers to invest in a PlayStation 3 console is Sony’s Blu-ray disc player, not the exclusive games available on the platform.
In a survey of 700 active gamers conducted by Nielsen, the report found that most gamers valued the Blu-ray capabilities of Sony’s console over its gaming capabilities. An overwhelming 65 per cent of gamers ranked Blu-ray in their top five motivating factors for buying a PS3 instead of rival consoles Xbox 360 or Wii.
Top 10 Motivators to Buy a PS3

The study was conducted after the recent launch of God of War 3, an exclusive title for the PS3 which was expected to be directly responsible for increased interest in Sony’s console.

“While it is assumed that high profile game titles can move gaming systems, recent Nielsen Games research suggests that consumers are driven by a myriad of factors. Surprisingly, the purchase of a specific game title actually ranks lowest in a list of purchase motivators,” the Nielsen report concluded.
Of the 12 per cent of gamers that did rank buying a specific game as a motivating factor, by far the most popular game was God of War 3. The third instalment of gloriously gory God of War franchise took 33 per cent of the popular vote, smashing second place contender Final Fantasy XIII into oblivion.
Is Sony Losing the Console Wars?
Given the lack of apparent interest in PS3 games, you might be forgiven for thinking that Microsoft is winning the gaming wars against its strongest rival in the market. A study using Metacritic data showed that PS3 is outshining Xbox in the exclusive games each console can offer.

Each game reviewed by Metacritic is given a METASCORE between 0-100 as a weighted average of the game reviews. The results showed that PS3 had far more exclusive games which received favourable reviews than Xbox, despite the 360 having twice the number of exclusive titles released overall.

Writing for Industry Gamers Anthony Neal explained: “What really sticks out here is the significant difference in the 90+ and 89-80 ranges. The PlayStation 3 has a distinct advantage in both of those categories, while the scenario is almost entirely flipped when we get down to the lower ranges.”
So PS3 users really want a console for its Blu-ray and multimedia functionality, but the exclusive titles such as God of War 3 are also kicking ass.

Halo > Anything Sony can bring.
Halo? Really? If you are into science fiction and like alien ray guns, sure. I find though that most adults like their games a little more grounded in reality. Though I would love to see the Halo Kitty Mod for Halo with lazier cats!
The PS3 is a great Blu-ray system AND it has great games – what’s not to like?
God of War is a good enough reason to get a PS3. I would buy one in a heartbeat just for the new game.
Nuff said.
OMG… he just the whole thing!
I am too frugal to buy Blu-ray disks, and don’t really care about the difference in quality. But I love watching Netflix and using Sony movie store for renting movies. I’ve also just started using it to stream music from my PC to our TV’s sound system. I haven’t played a ‘game’ on my PS3 in over a year.
If you know anything about math, this article shows nothing.
Still waiting on GT5, one of the main reasons I bought the PS3.
The PS3 HAS NO GAMES.
The study used Metacritic data – but it was not from Metacritic. Please clarify.
Thanks for the comment, you are absolutely right the report was not from Metacritic itself, but did use their data. The article has been amended accordingly. DF.
Halo is a dumb overrated FPS for children.
Halo is a joke. PS3 is the better system. Might as well called it the Halo 360.
the PS3 has no games.
The Sony PlayStation 3 does not harbor any video games of particular interest.
