Resident Evil Revelations Introduces a Pair of Walking Boobs

Rachel Walking Boobs

Sometimes I don’t think Capcom are even trying any more.

Take a look at this video of the upcoming Resident Evil Revelations 3DS game. It introduces Rachel, who will feature in the story in some as yet undetermined fashion. Tell me, what do you see?

That’s right, you see boobs. In a dark and dingy cruise ship where you can see pretty much jack-all of interest, Capcom has thrown a set of well-lit boobies right up in the viewers’ grille.

Don’t get me wrong, I’ve no problem with breasts in games. Or breasts anywhere in fact, quite the opposite. There’s nothing wrong with a bit of boob-action to help take the edge off a particularly tiresome dialogue piece or just letting them jiggle about generally during gameplay. I have a similar policy on pert asses, fyi.

There’s nothing inherently wrong with providing male or female eye candy in games. It’s not something that developers should feel the need to shy away from. However, if a character is built solely on their sex appeal without a strong personality to back it up, that’s just plain lazy and more than a little condescending towards the game’s players.

Just from this 1:41 minute video I can already tell that I hate Rachel as a character. The combination of her stupid hair that falls over almost the entirety of her face and her boobs which look like they’re straining to be set free of her impractical top and start a blissful life together elsewhere makes her look faintly ridiculous.

To be fair, Capcom’s Resident Evil franchise has a habit of producing annoying, ridiculous minor characters. (Alfred Ashford, anyone?) When it comes to character creation, Capcom has some very strange ideas on what makes both the good and bad guys compelling.

Resident Evil Revelations Don’t worry, she’s also packing a tight ass.

Where Rachel differs in the Rogues Gallery of crap Capcom characters is that she seems to have been constructed entirely for the purpose of sex appeal. I don’t think I’ve seen Capcom go for the “foxy chick angle” before with as much gusto as this.

3 seconds into the cinematic (after the title and intro text) and BAM! ASS SHOT! I know that lots of developers are guilty of this little trick, but at least they then generally move on to establish the character. In this trailer you get a few seconds of legs and ass, a second of Rachel in profile to see her long hair then. BAM! BOOBS SHOT!

You can’t even see Rachel’s eyes through her long hair, signifying that her designers think your attention will naturally be diverted elsewhere. I guess it’s no coincidence that the next lengthy shot of Rachel’s boobs is framed by the long dripping strands of ghoul-drool. A subtle jab at your male audience, Capcom?

In the whole video the viewer is given nothing to go on to build up an idea of Rachel’s character other than the fact that she has a fine figure, impractical dress sense and makes cliched, almost comical outbursts of supposed terror:

“Why is this happening? Why me?!”

Well Rachel, apparently it’s because Capcom needs a vehicle for tits. And that vehicle is you.

Resident Evil Revelations should be released for the Nintendo 3DS sometime in early 2012 and will feature Jill Valentine, Chris Redfield and a bunch of useless, forgettable non-characters whose purpose is to live fast and die messily.

One Response to Resident Evil Revelations Introduces a Pair of Walking Boobs

  1. S.Conlin says:

This could be a moot point, as the full trailer shows her being brutally killed almost as quickly as she’s introduced. Sure, maybe there’s more to her story than that, but that remains to be seen.
