Tennis master Roger Federer wins 16th Grand Slam title by defeating British hopeful Andy Murray.

Grand Slam king Roger Federer won his 16th major title against Andy Murray, winning in three sets 6-3 6-4 7-6 at the Rod Laver Arena in Melbourne. This was his fourth Australian Open win in his career.

The Swiss player Federer proved he was not about fade away as the World No 1. After his record breaking 15 Grand Slam wins, overtaking fellow tennis legend Pete Sampras, Federer then significantly became a father when his wife Mirka Vavrinec gave birth to twin girls. All doubts were washed away however as Federer was in the form of his life.

He said: “I think I played some of the best tennis of my life these past two weeks. This is a special moment – a first Grand Slam as a father,” quoted the Daily Mail.

Runner up Murray, was complimentary towards his opponent: “I’d like to congratulate Roger. His achievements in tennis are incredible and to keep doing it year after year is pretty special. He was a lot better than me.”

Murray, who has raised expectations of a hopeful British public after performing brilliantly to reach this years final, must have felt huge pressure going into the match.

The Scot, obviously deflated with the defeat, apologised to his army of fans who have travelled to watch him. Murray said: “Sorry I couldn’t do it for you tonight. I can cry like Roger, it’s just a shame I can’t play like him.”

Murray serve was broken in first service game as Federer raced to a 2-0 lead but Murray broke back to make it 2-2. Federer then imposed himself on the match with some great returns and first serves to break his opponent again and take the first set 6-3.

Federer won the second set 6-4 and in an exciting tie-break in the third set both players displayed their fantastic abilities with long rallies on each point.

Murray saw an opportunity to set up a comeback but let slip five set points. Federer sealed the win when on his third championship point after Murray hit a backhand into the net.
