Schumacher Stigs it to Top Gear faithful

Legendary Formula One star Michael Schumacher revealed as Top Gears STIG.

The secret identity of Top Gear‘s Stig has kept car fans guessing for years now, all we knew is he’s called The Stig. But know we now something else, that he’s also called Michael Schumacher.

Jeremy Clarkson, presenter of the popular BBC show, teased earlier in the week that the true identity of The Stig would be revealed during the first episode of the new series, which started last night. The Stig has long wowed viewers of the show as the resident test driver who gives cars the proverbial run-around.

His mysterious masked visage has led to him developing a huge cult following with comical rumours whispered about his mystical prowess: “Some say he can start cars with his mind… all we know is he’s called The Stig”

In a segment on last night’s episode The Stig finally took his helmet off and revealed himself to be the seven-time Formula One champion, prompting Clarkson to excitedly exclaim “It’s Michael Schumacher!” The reason, according to Clarkson, for the unmasking was that The Stig was: “fed up with newspapers speculating that he’s a photocopier salesman from Bolton, or lives in a pebble-dashed house in Bristol”.

It is thought that the mantle of The Stig has been held by a few people over the years, the original Stig was Perry McCarthy, himself previously a Formula One competitor. Stunt driver Ben Collins, who has worked as a stunt double in the new James Bond film, has also been touted as a Stig.
