Schwarzenegger – Judgement Day for US health reform
Final White House forum held on reshaping the American healthcare system.
A host of celebrities in Los Angeles led by Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger teamed up with doctors and company CEOs to make US President Barack Obama’s dream of healthcare reform a reality.
Gov. Schwarzenegger said: “The American system of healthcare is falling far short of its mission,” who pledged to terminate outmoded healthcare policies.
The fifth White House forum for healthcare was held yesterday to decide the future of the American healthcare system. Gov. Schwarzenegger was an advocate of President Obama’s increased healthcare coverage for those Americans who cannot afford insurance.
According to Gov. Schwarzenegger, the current system is, “leaving millions of our fellow citizens in poor health and with inadequate care or no care at all,” reported Reuters. California accounts for 13 per cent of the nation’s uninsured Americans. Some 6 million people in the state struggle on the poverty line, simply unable to justify the cost of health insurance.
Gov. Schwarzenegger has been trying to push a healthcare reform in California for the best part of two years now with little marked improvement. Progress has been hampered since the onset of recession. With unemployment rising, many American’s who depend on their employer to provide health insurance benefits, now find themselves without that safety net.
President Obama made a point of campaigning for “change we need” and “change we can believe in”. At this moment, a healthcare reform is certainly what the 15 per cent of the uninsured population need; whether it is something they can believe in is quite another thing.
The US currently spends approximately $2.5 trillion on a healthcare system that is largely condemned as inadequate. In order to accommodate Obama’s vision to expand healthcare to the uninsured, American’s will have to spend something in the order of $375 billion. With so many demands on limited resources, surely even Obama’s political alchemy cannot conjure funds of that magnitude.

The reform efforts should be focused on health care INSURANCE to provide access for all. Then move on to reforming the health care system. Thank you, Dr. David Robinson.
