Scientists to Study Iron Man Ozzy Osbourne’s Genes
Scientists are mapping Ozzy Osbourne’s genetic code to see how he survived years of substance abuse.
Geneticists are to map Ozzy Osbourne’s human genome to discover how a man infamous for abusing his body was able to survive decades of alcohol and drugs.
Now in his 60s, no-one is more surprised than Ozzy that his body was able to cope with the stresses of virtually constant substance abuse. The singer described himself as a “medical miracle” after going on an epic 40 year bender.
Now scientific interest has been piqued to discover whether Ozzy’s incredible resilience is genetic. Using a sample of Ozzy’s blood, US company Knome will spend three months of research to map the DNA of the Black Sabbath frontman. At $40,000 (£27,000) the research is not cheap, but the company believe that analysing extraordinary human beings is the key to progressing medical science.
Other famous faces to take part in the Knome project are Desperate Housewives star Eva Longoria, Hollywood legend Meryl Streep and Olympic gold medal-winning figure skater Kristi Yamaguchi. Ozzy however, remains by far and away the most notorious of the celebrities to be examined for genetic sequencing.
Director of research at Knome, Nathan Pearson told Sky News: “Sequencing and analysing individuals with extreme medical histories provides the greatest potential scientific value.” Extreme medical history is perhaps an understatement for a man who admitted to regular drinking sessions of four bottles of brandy a day and snorting cocaine off his dog, but Ozzy is certainly of scientific value.
Other celebrities that have pushed their bodies to the limit for future studies might include Pete Doherty, Robin Williams, Amy Winehouse, Keith Richards, and Eddie Murphy.

This is interesting stuff! Ozzy has led a hard life, up there with Keith Richards and Lemmy. It’s a wonder that he’s still alive (and I hope he will live for a long time). I hope they publish the results. Maybe they’ll find something interesting? Who knows. I don’t believe in God, but if I did the first one I’d say “god bless” to would be Ozzy. Ozzmosis! (hehe)
