The latest trailer for Total War: Shogun 2 expansion sees the Samurai fighting for their very existence.
As the “Tom Cruise stand-in” narrator tells it, Japan is in a state of turmoil where civil war is engulfing every province once again. With imagery evocative of The Last Samurai, it seems that sword, bow and spear will soon be replaced with rifle, cannon and Gatling machine gun.
This is not to say that the Samurai cannot give good account of themselves before being ground into the dust of history. Glorious charges, cunning ambushes and dedicated martial prowess can still allow the feudal lords of battle to make the forces of modernisation feel their sting.
So prepare to pick a side this March once Shogun 2: Fall of The Samurai is released. Will you stand with the last remnants of a way of life that has endured for thousands of years? Or will you take up the modern weapons of war and do your utmost to sweep it away?
