Snowbound Britain Caught Cold By Ice

Snow continues to blanket the UK as conditions turn icy.

Further travel chaos erupted today across the UK as the fallen snow turned to ice, causing havoc on the roads and railways as well as grounding many flights.

As the temperatures plummeted to -18.4°C in some areas last night, roads and railways froze meaning more people were unable to get to work today.

The snow has been met with mixed reaction however, with children relishing another day off school in many parts of the country and enjoying the snow with sledging and snowballs galore.

Gnews has brought back a popular favourite from last year with a snow picture competition – The Olympus Snow Photo Competition 2010 is open!

Financial analysts are worried that the snow will cause a major setback to economic recovery as the UK attempts to drag itself out of recession. According to The Times yesterday, the freak weather is costing UK businesses hundreds of millions of pounds each day that staff fail to turn up to work.

With 10,000 schools closing across the UK, parents are being forced to stay at home and look after their children rather than go to work.

So far the damage to UK business has been estimated at over £2 billion as a result of the snow storms. With more bad weather due over the weekend, the chaos could continue into next week, particularly in light of salt and grit shortages in some parts of the UK.

In travel, Gatwick airport suffered from severe ice on its runways, forcing British Airways and easyJet to cancel most of their services. 136 inbound and outbound flights were cancelled today in total. A Eurostar train broke down in the channel tunnel causing more disruptions for the company.

The Olympus Snow Photo Competition 2010

Last year we ran a competition to see how British people were affected by the snow when it blanketed the UK in February. This year we have brought the competition back, bigger and better.

We’ve opened up the competition to encourage our international friends to enter their pictures of winter wonderlands. The Olympus Snow Photo Competition 2010 has gone global, and we want your pictures of the snow. There are five Olympus cameras up for grabs for the best photos, details of which will be released soon!

Enter a picture yourself, or vote on other entries in the snow competition and be sure to follow further announcements on Twitter.
