Steelers Continue Defiant Winning Run

New NFL season kicks off with Pittsburgh victory overcoming Tennessee Titans.

The NFL season got off to a tense start, but the Pittsburgh Steelers picked up where they left off last season with a tightly fought for victory.

Super Bowl champions beat the Tennessee Titans but it was a narrow victory of 13-10 in a highly contested defensive match. The Titans were formidable in their defence for most of the evening and the Steelers had to dig deep to pull back a fourth quarter deficit in order to triumph in overtime.

A lacklustre offensive line were outplayed by Tennessee and Pittsburgh had to rely on quarterback Ben Roethlisberger to steal the game. Speaking after the match, Roethlisberger jested to the Los Angeles Times: “I told coach I didn’t want to start this already,” referring to the Steelers 18th victory in regular season play which relied on a fourth-quarter comeback.

Roethlisberger who completed 76 per cent of his passes on the night pulled out all of the stops on when it came to crunch time, completing 17 of his final 19 passes. Coach Mike Tomlin praised the quarterback: “When the rubber meets the road, he is at his best. In those moments, he sees it with great clarity. He’s provided quality plays time and again.”

The Steelers should have had the game sown up in regulation time but Tennessee escaped an early defeat when Hines Ward fumbled four yards away from the touchline with only 51 seconds left in the quarter. Pittsburgh took control of overtime though and in the end won comfortably.

On a sad note for the Steelers, Troy Polamalu was hurt during the game with a knee injury that could keep him sidelined for at least three weeks.
