Britain’s Got Talent star Susan Boyle has set a new YouTube record racking up an astonishing 100 million hits.
The video of the Scottish singer from West Lothian has become the most viewed YouTube clip of all time as online audiences marvelled at her extraordinary rendition of I Dreamed A Dream from Les Misérables.
TV talent contests have had to evolve in order to continue captivating regular audiences. Talent judge Simon Cowell has cleverly crafted many “rags to riches” tales through a tried and tested formula in American Idol and The X Factor. What’s different about the appeal of Britain’s Got Talent is the “surprise factor” as unlikely misfits reveal unpolished but nevertheless breathtaking ability.
The Susan Boyle reveal will take some beating however. Mocked and laughed at by the audience as she entered the stage because of her slightly unusual mannerisms and bedraggled appearance, the jaws visibly dropped as the magnificent voice erupted from the mouth of the “hairy angel”.
There were certainly echoes this year of the original rough diamond discovery, Paul Potts, another unassuming singer who became a YouTube sensation.
Since the phenomenal viral success of the YouTube clip, Miss Boyle has become an overnight success with television appearances in America and Britain. Miss Boyle has also benefited from a constant stream of online buzz from social blogging site Twitter, attracting fans such as actress Demi Moore.
Such is the success of that one performance; talks have begun about a film chronicling the life of Miss Boyle, with director James Cameron and actress Catherine Zeta-Jones both linked with the project.
Susan Boyle need not dream again, as her success becomes a reality.
Please do not refer to Susan Boyle as the Hairy Angel. That is demeaning and she deserves much better from the media. Please refer to her by her name, or if you must apply a description in addition, then use your writing talents and creativity to come up with another description which is respectful and appropriate. There are hundreds of thousands of people on YouTube who are not professional writers yet they have come up with much more appropriate words to describe the gifted singer.
In response to the above comment: my understanding is that this is not a site for professional writers; it is an online public news forum that anyone can post news in.
More importantly however, I did not coin the term “Hairy Angel” hence my use of quotation marks in the article. If you find the term demeaning perhaps you should take up your complaint with the British press such as the Daily Mail, Daily Star, Times Online, The Guardian and others which all used the term before I quoted them. Whether you agree with it or not, “Hairy Angel” is a term associated with Ms Boyle, in the same way that David Beckham is referred to as “Golden Balls” even though some people may find that double entendre offensive.
Susan is the best, most wholesome singer ever!!!! Uplifting, inspirational and inspires the basic will to just to go on wth life. I adore her and wish her every success. Jean, age 71, and in need of her message.

There’s something about Susan… in addition to being a phenomenal singer and having chosen a song that appears to reflect her life… in some ways… there is also something intangible that millions of people recognise in this individual and who I for one can’t put my finger on… but still who cares – she’s great and like others before me I sincerely hope she has a rewarding career ahead of her… good luck Susan!
There is so much to Susan Boyle. She is talented beyond her singing. I am sure there isn’t anything anyone could say that would phase her. She is more secure than most people I know. I have no doubt Susan Boyle could be the best comedian, actress and singer ever to come from BGT.
