The President of Sri Lanka has annonuced an end to the 26 year conflict.

Sri Lanka announced today that their war against terror with the Tamil Tigers was over. President Mahinda Rajapaksa announced that Velupillai Prabhakaran, the rebel leader of the Tamil Tigers, had been killed.

While the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam claimed that Prabhakaran was still alive, the President of Sri Lanka declared the civil war over, and broadcasted images of a body, which was claimed to indeed be that of the rebel leader.

The Sri Lankan ministry of defence released a statement on their website saying: “The body of V Prabhakaran, psychopathic leader of world’s most barbaric terrorist outfit Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) has been found short while ago”.

Graphic pictures were shown on state television showing a body clad in the signature military garb of Prabhakaran, and a dog tag with “001″ inscribed. The head of the body was partially concealed but a Tamil Tiger ID card was also found.

This news could bring an end to a conflict that has been raging on for 26 years and claimed over 70,000 lives. President Rajapaksa spoke to his nation and declared a national holiday in celebration of the victory. He said: “Our intention was to save the Tamil people from the cruel grip of the LTTE. We all must now live as equals in this free country. We have liberated the whole country from LTTE terrorism.”

The news has also led to violence in London as angry Tamil protestors clashed with police officers outside the Houses of Parliament. Five people were arrested with up to 11 people thought to be injured.
