Thai Protesters Won’t Stop Till Prime Minister Resigns
A month long vigil from Thai protesters could not be halted by military intervention, and “red-shirts” won’t quit until Prime Minister steps down.
Protests continue in Thailand despite 21 people being killed and more than 800 injured when violence broke out at the weekend.
The military crackdown resulted in the deaths of 17 civilians and four soldiers, but the anti-government protesters remained resolute as ever at their multiple demonstration sites around Bangkok.
The vigil has been going for a month now, as the “red-shirt” protesters again called for Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva to step down from his post. The minister rejected any such notion despite the mounting pressure from the people for his resignation.
Illegal donations to Mr Vejjajiva’s Democrat Party have sparked anger from the electorate, calling for parliament to be dissolved. “We will achieve our goal when Abhisit dissolves parliament,” protest leader Nattawut Siakuar told the BBC, “We want him to dissolve the House and have new elections, so people will decide the government.”
The government for their part are trying to work towards a diplomatic compromise, but the protesters have repeatedly rejected any solution which does not end in the resignation of the Prime Minister and new elections to vote in a fresh government.
Trying to deflect some of the scorn, the Thai foreign minister, Kasit Piromya attacked the former Prime Minister Thakson Shinawatra, who is still missing after being sentenced to two years in jail for corruption. “Everyone is washing their hands but he is a bloody terrorist,” the foreign minister said during a visit to Washington at the nuclear summit.
The government hopes to resolve the protest within the next few days.

Seriously, all the red shirts want is Thaksin back again as the prime minster. They don’t care about the how the people are going to react and how changing the government is going to affect the nation.
