Tiger falters in Arizona comeback
South African Tim Clarke pinned back the American golf legend with a superior display.
Unlike in Hollywood, in life, not all comebacks are triumphant.
You could see the disappointment in the faces of the legions of American golf fans waiting to see their fallen hero surge back to greatness.
They were waiting expectantly for the patriotic and uplifting music to reach a magnificent crescendo as the magician of the golf course reclaimed his invincible mantle.
Sadly it was not to be. Woods was outclassed by a dominant Tim Clark in Arizona as the South African claimed an incredible 4&2 victory over the world number one. It was certainly not the fairytale ending everyone had been hoping for.
Tiger Woods may be the singularly most gifted golfer the world has ever seen, but he is not Superman, and even Tiger has bad days. Woods had asked a lot of himself coming back after eight months out with surgery to his knee and the lack of match practice showed.

On the 15th hole, Woods hit a horror-drive which had more curve on it than a David Beckham free kick. His out of bounds shot left Tiger in an almost unwinnable position, and sure enough by the end of the 16th green, Tim Clark had won by four holes with two still to play.
The return wasn’t a complete failure for Tiger. In his boundless optimism he said: “I am pleased with how I am hitting the ball. I only hit two bad shots in two days, but I didn’t make enough birdies,” according to The Guardian.
Tiger hasn’t lost his wizard’s touch, there was one moment of magic to savour on the 14th hole when out of nowhere he holed a shot from a greenside bunker, but the usual Woods pixie dust was spread thin on an otherwise bland performance.
Fear not, if there is one thing you can depend on, it’s that Tiger will go away, practice ferociously, and came back stronger and hungrier to win. The triumphant return is coming, golf fans will just have to wait a little longer for it.
