Transfer Flurry before New Premier League Season

Latest rumours of transfer bids from England’s top four.

It’s an exciting time in the English Premier League and footballers are causing controversy without even putting boot to ball. The 2009/10 season isn’t due to start until 15 August, but there is still a frenzy of activity as clubs prepare in pre-season with player transfers to make their team the next world-beaters.

Having dispensed with Portuguese playboy Crisitiano Ronaldo for a cool £80 million, Manchester United have been searching for inspirational replacements for their star winger and playmaker. The free transfer of injury plagued Michael Owen from Newcastle isn’t likely to be the salvation United need to retain their Premiership title.

United’s Führer, Sir Alex Ferguson has already lost out on the race to buy French flair in the form of Karim Benzema and Franck Ribery, settling instead for a less well known French winger Gabriel Obertan. The latest suggestion is that Sir Alex could have his eye on Inter’s Zlatan Ibrahimovic. The Swedish star scored 25 goals in 35 appearances for Inter last year in Serie A.

The Red Devils had also been linked with Gunner Robin Van Persie, but Arsenal’s star striker committed to the London club earlier this week signing a long-term contract which will pay him a reported £80,000 a week. Boosted by the news that Van Persie was going nowhere, Arsenal now could have another fight on their hands keeping hold of Cesc Fabregas.

Barcelona have revealed that they will happily sell their striker Samuel Eto’o to Manchester City in order to obtain funds to launch a £40 million bid for the Spanish playmaker. Fabregas has been disappointed with a lack of trophies at Arsenal, and could be tempted to play for the Champions League and La Liga champions in Spain next season.

Liverpool and Chelsea have problems of their own keeping their stars, although Liverpool successfully managed to hang on to talisman Steven Gerrard until 2013. Chelsea have vehemently stamped on any rumours that captain John Terry could be on the move, but nothing has been confirmed from the England centre back.
