Travel Agents Pray for Early England World Cup Exit
Bookings are unpredictable for as long as England stay in the competition.
The travel industry is secretly hoping that England get knocked out of the World Cup early in order to stabilise bookings, according to online travel company ulookubook.com.
With just three days to go to the opening game of the World Cup, excitement is building to fever pitch and everyone is getting ready to cheer their team – all except travel agents. Although bookings to South Africa have been booming with a 206 per cent rise in online searches for flights to South Africa, other holidays have been stalling.
“The problem is, unlike most summers it’s really difficult to predict demand this year,” commented Media Manager Ian Raine in a travel press release, “If they’re unlucky the travel industry could end up with a glut of bookings at either end of the Cup but not during it.”
Mr Raine admitted that, “it wouldn’t be a surprise if the travel industry was collectively holding its breath, secretly hoping the England are knocked out early.” With England out of the tournament, normality can return to the travel industry and bookings should continue as expected. However, with Rooney, Lampard and Co. flying the flag for England, uncertainty remains in the minds of football fans planning a holiday abroad.
So far holidays to Tenerife have remained strong. The Canary Island has a well-established tradition of British holidaymakers and football matches will be shown on TV screens in pubs right along the island. Similarly, destinations in the Balearics such as Ibiza and Majorca will be showing England matches.
As long as England remains in the competition, travel bookings will be precarious. Now travel agents will join the Scots as ardent supporters of anyone but England to triumph at the World Cup.
