UK Government Gives Arlene Phillips a Job

The ex-Strictly Come Dancing judge has been chosen as the figurehead for a national campaign promoting health through dancing.

The UK government has appointed former Strictly Come Dancing judge Arlene Phillips as one of its new ‘Dance Champions’, according to an article on Digital Spy.

The Department of Health is behind the Dance Champions Group, to be chaired by ex-Capita supremo Rod Aldridge. It aims to increase participation in dance classes and competitions across the British Isles – especially in the run-up to the 2012 Olympics.

Health secretary Andy Burnham said that he wants the 66-year-old Arlene to show people what they can do and help the Government to improve the nation’s health. Her group will front a national campaign encouraging people who have a horror of the gym to keep fit by taking up dance classes instead.

The minister said: “We’re really in danger of being known as the best in the world for watching sport, but one of the worst for getting out there and doing it for ourselves.”

She has now become the latest in a string of celebrities appointed to official positions by the UK government, such as The Apprentice figurehead Sir Alan Sugar. Other members of the group include newsreader Angela Rippon – who first showcased her dancing skills in the 1970s on The Morecambe and Wise Show – alongside Arlene’s former Strictly. protegés Darren Bennett and Lisa Snowdon.

The departure of Arlene from the hit BBC show – and her replacement on the judging panel with pop star Alesha Dixon and ballerina Darcey Bussell – provoked a media storm in the UK last month, with many believing that she had been given the shove simply due to her age.

Over 60s have little access to modern dance classes. Many of us prefer disco to sequence dancing. Less ballroom and more rock and roll! Why not make use of leisure centres for regular dance sessions, 60s/70s music.

    Hi.

I work for Ribble Valley Council in Longridge and we run Silver Mondays which promotes exercise for the over 50s at our civic hall in Longridge, near Preston. You can do all sorts of activities. We do run a tea dance but we also have things like Tai Chi.
